Adelaide Central Markets

Adelaide, South Australia, Australia

Whenever I travel, I try to spend some time at the local supermarket or fresh markets. Wherever I travel, I am often awestruck with some of the different delicacies available and how it contributes to the culture of a place. I hate shopping, but I can spend a whole day in a market when it has something different to offer.

The Adelaide Central Market is one of the biggest markets in Australia. Imagine my surprise that such an oasis is smack bang in the middle of Adelaide’s central business district! Approaching the market, the smell of car fumes was replaced by ripe bananas and stone fruit. The market is huge and it took several hours to examine all of the more than 120 stalls that make up the Adelaide Central Market. The market isn’t open every day so be sure to time your visit. There is a lot of choice at these markets and, considering that most of the fresh fruit comes from farms around Adelaide, there is an amazing amount of variety.

Central Market Adelaide

An excellent market in the city centre

However, no matter what, don’t go past the chance to sample some of the cheeses and seafood. It is magnificent and it will make a meal. The markets are crowded and that can add to the magic of the place. With so much activity and energy, it is very hard not to get caught up in it. If you don’t like crowds, then the best time to visit is earlier in the week. Reviewer: Troy Krippen
