Africa Mountain Bike Safari

Are you feeling particularly daring? Do you have what it takes to view Africa’s famous, wild animals from the saddle of your mountain bike instead of the (relative) safety of a Land Cruiser? Fancy pedalling across Madagascar and seeing lemurs? Keen on riding some remote 4×4 roads around the base of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania or Kenya? Or the opportunity to spot crocodiles, rhinos or hippos in South Africa’s game parks?

One of the latest trends in adventure travel is the mountain bike safari trip. Holiday companies have sprung up with offerings of cycling safaris in every region of the African continent. A common thread among the tours is the use of your mountain bike as a means of transportation along unimproved, dirt roads, bringing you face to face with the local culture. Food, safari-style lodging and support vehicle services are provided. One company even offers the chance to try archery, hunting and fishing along the way.

For the most part, the riding itself is non-technical, suited to even the beginner mountain biker. The real adventure comes when a giraffe or elephant wanders across your path! You might not find the sweet descents or swooping, hard-packed singletrack of other mountain biking venues, but you’ll go home with once-in-a-lifetime photos of your cycling safari.
