Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat Complex

Siem Reap, Angkor, Cambodia

The Angkor Wat Complex is, and most likely always will be, one of my top three places in the world. It is exotic, fascinating, a little wild and visiting it is a little like being in an Indiana Jones movie. Angkor Wat itself is just one of the many temples included in the Angkor Wat Complex. Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by the Khmer King Suryavarman II as his palace and capital city.

At this time, the kingdom was Hindu and the impressive stone carvings represent different aspects of Hindu mythology, as well as every day life at the temple and palace. The best time to get there is at dawn to see the sun rise over the temple and then check it out before the sun really hits.

There are many different temples in the surrounding jungles and many of them were completely abandoned and left to the jungle vines to inhabit for hundreds of years. The whole complex was unknown to the outside world and largely forgotten about by Cambodians too. This lost city was only brought to the attention of the outside world by a French explorer in the mid 19th century. My only advice is – GO THERE. It is beautiful, exotic, mysterious, adventurous and incredible.
