Argentina Mountain Biking

What does the second largest country in South America offer for the panoramic-view-seeking mountain biker with a spirit of adventure? Argentina has snow-capped volcanoes, the arid, windswept Cerros of the Andes, the haunting Patagonian Steppe, sub-tropical jungle teeming with birds and plant life. A veritable banquet for the cyclist hungering for a challenge, extreme beauty and a diverse, cultural experience rolled into one.

Group and individual tours are on offer here starting at venues near to Buenos Aires and those as remote and far-away as Ushuaia, the most southerly tip of Argentina. Tours range from lengthy, fortnight-long adventures, taking cyclists over obscure and lofty (try 2460 metres/8070 feet above sea level!) mountain passes in the Andes, to the salt mines of Jujuy and sub-tropical tracks that weave their way through rainforest terrain.

Although most tours in Argentina promote the ‘adventure’ aspect of riding (some even combining canoeing, horseback riding and extreme sports with the cycling tour), there are offerings for those of tamer ambitions. Flat, novice, singletrack and doubletrack dirt roads can be found on tours near coastal towns and villages, such as the famous Punta del Este. Some of these tours include bits of local, cultural dabbling at museums and landmarks and even, in the right season, a bit of whale watching.
