Baltusrol Golf Club

Springfield, New Jersey, United States of America

Baltusrol has two championship courses, the Lower Course having hosted seven US Open championships and the Upper Course which was recently upgraded. Both are highly regarded and regularly rated in the top 100 courses in the world. The courses differ in character slightly; the Upper routes into the slopes and forests of the mountain that gives the course its name, and the Lower Course on dense forest and flatter territory which nonetheless attempts to make every lie on the fairway an uneven one. Both are products of the legendary course designer A.W. Tillinghast, who also designed many other courses featuring in the world’s top rated courses. The Lower Course finishes with back to back par 5’s; the 17th is a monstrous uphill 592 m to the pin. In 1993 big hitter John Daley became the first player to reach the green in two, hitting a driver and one iron to do so. Baltusrol has no quirks or unique tricks to the course. Every hole is a solid test of golf with long distances from the tees and tricky greens. It attempts only to be an exceptional championship golf course – and it succeeds in that perfectly.
