Bridport, Tasmania, Australia
Built on the north shore of Tasmania outside a quaint fishing village, the Dunes aptly features a links style golf course with few trees and some extensive sand dunes. With the amount of natural sand occurring everywhere, the designers have taken a free reign with the bunkers – and they appear in all imaginable shapes. Moon-like waste craters, conventional greenside sand traps and deep pot bunkers leave a pock-marked trail of misery for the unwitting golfer from the first to the last. Such an integral part of links play, they are well-crafted and strategically placed; for those who have sufficient control of their drives and approach shots, constant adaptation is required to fashion shots that don’t end on a sandy bottom. The scenery is captivating and the layout leads you on a meandering route through canyons and hills created by the dunes everywhere. As a traditional links course should be played, there’s usually a stiff breeze out of the north-west to factor into your line and length and it will certainly be part of the considerations on the popular 7th. A short and tough par 3, an island-like green waits for you with bunkers front and left, plus a head wind, rough and steep drop offs. Afterwards you’ll enjoy some of the best service and hospitality you will find on a golf course, sit back and mark off another of the top courses in the world.
