Blue Canyon Country Club

Phuket, Thailand

Built on a tropical island in the Andaman Sea, the Canyon Course at Blue Canyon presents one of the toughest golf challenges in Asia. Despite having to deal with hot and humid conditions virtually year-round, this course will punish any loss of concentration with its hazards and rough. The course is as visually spectacular as you are likely to find and presents every golfer with a number of shots that will be remembered long after the course has been played.

Built on an area originally used as a rubber plantation and tin mine, the front nine winds its fairways through densely packed rubber trees and heavy undergrowth, while the back nine uses the canyons and watery fill-ins created by the old mining activities. The greens are probably the toughest part of this course – all are fast and most are undulating, requiring a good eye for the break. The par three 14th is a postcard golf hole with its kidney-shaped island green set in an expanse of water, 155m away from a high tee. If you find the water with your tee shot, console yourself with the knowledge that Faldo and Norman have made the same mistake. Finally, ending off with a massage in the impressive locker rooms is an excellent way to finish any round of golf.
