Bourke Street Mall

Bourke Street Mall

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Bourke Street Mall is one of the most well known (and much loved) shopping strips in all of Melbourne. Home to the Myer flagship store, David Jones, and a host of popular chain stores, Bourke Street Mall caters to most shoppers, who can easily spend half a day browsing through the different retailers in the street. Located between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets, Bourke Street Mall is closed off to all local traffic, with the only exception being a tramline that runs right through the centre of the street.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that this makes the mall any less busy. The street is always filled with shoppers, city workers, students and tourists, and you’ll usually find a busker or two performing at any given time as you stroll amongst the stores. People who are looking for a more upmarket shopping experience (and don’t want to travel too far from the mall) can visit the GPO building, on the corner of Elizabeth and Bourke Streets. Originally opened in 1864, this former postal building was refurbished and converted into a luxury fashion and dining hub over five years ago, and is always popular with those at the top of the style chain.

For those who are stuck for ideas regarding things to see and do while in Melbourne, there is a Visitor Information Booth located midway along the street. The staff here will be happy to assist you, and often have great recommendations for the best coffee or shopping spots in the area (trust me, I’ve asked!). They’re also handy with directions if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by the size of the city and have lost your way. There are plenty of shopping strips, malls and plazas in Melbourne, but Bourke Street Mall ranks up high with the best of them, and is well worth visiting if you get the chance.
