Bran Castle

Bran Castle

Bran, Brasov, Romania

Known as “Dracula’s Castle” because allegedly a former resident was the person that the vampire story was based on, Bran Castle is truly one of the most striking castles to visit in Europe. It is improbably high on a steep hill with dramatic lines and turrets piercing the sky.

Visit the castle to view collections of furniture and art belonging to Queen Marie of Romania. This was a royal residence and home of the Queen, and is a fascinating peek into royal tastes during the 1920’s including the Queen’s collection of Romanian crafts. In fact, the museum is dedicated to her life and that of the reign of her family, so you will also see clothes, dolls, beds and personal furniture as well.

There are guided tours, however you are also free to roam the castle on your own. Try to make it to a high spot for photos and take in the wonderful views.

If you would like to dwell in “Dracula” mythology, stay at one of the many B&B’s in the busy village, visit one of the many “Dracula” souvenir shops, dine on local Romanian cuisine, and visit the Haunted House. Visit the castle on a gloomy day with dark clouds and you may just experience a vampire-like chill.
