Bundoran, County Donegal, Ireland
Bundoran locals laid it all on the line and went public to save their wave from a mariner development. They invited the surf media to film, photograph and write articles about their little known surf spot. Now, their local is widely known as Irelands best wave and up there with Europe’s best surf spots.
Bundoran is a horse shoe shaped rock reef. It pitches out a perfect A-frame and a powerful right and left that spits at both ends. The right is short and intense, the left a longer tubing wave. It is a cold water classic big, fast, thick and with plenty of punch.
The paddle out there is a long way and rips in the bay can be strong. Locals recommend sound fitness to take this wave on. Bundoran is at its best head high to double overhead. The right will hold up to 4 times overhead. A west swell is the ideal direction with an east to southeast wind.
The Irish are famous for their hospitality, and travelling surfers who are friendly and don’t mind buying a round at the pub will be welcomed into homes and maybe a wave or two.
