Caerphilly, Wales, United Kingdom
Caerphilly Castle Caerphilly Castle is located about seven miles North of Cardiff in Caerphilly, Wales. The castle is the second largest in the UK, only being outdone by Windsor Castle itself. Considered as one of the finest remaining examples of pure medieval military structures, it is still surrounded by moats and entered across wooden drawbridges that connect to the independently constructed fortresses that comprise the castle proper.
For castle purists, I imagine that this is on the “must see” list when visiting the UK, but for someone who was for many years a local, and one whom could have easily taken it for granted, it is all the same something that inspires amazement and transports me back to the 13th Century. For me, my friends and colleagues, in addition to the massive presence that is imposed by its size and its undeniable sense of history, it is also a place of reverie, given that the great hall has been re-fitted for modern day catering and can be rented for large events such as huge weddings or in our case, Christmas parties and charity events. The torch lit walls with the crests of the Butes, Glamorgans and others combined with the Welsh sky by night is something that even the most jaded of travellers could never forget. Meg
