Cairngorms Mountain Biking

Aviemore, Cairngorms, United Kingdom

As anyone knows who has ever gone hill-walking in Scotland, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world when the sun is shining, but when it’s not, mud can be a prominent feature to contend with. So plan your trip to Aviemore and the Cairngorms in August or September. Give yourself a few days to wait out the rain, if necessary, and you’ll soon be riding some stellar singletracks.

Local bike shops sell detailed maps of mountain bike tracks complete with ratings for novice, intermediate and advanced. Guided tours are available, but, by using the town of Aviemore as your base and asking a few questions of that dedicated rider you encounter when you hire your bike, you’ll easily be able to plan your own self-guided holiday.

Rothiemurchus Estate has forest trails suitable for the novice rider who primarily wishes to enjoy the spectacular Highlands scenery. It also offers technical tracks for the fit cyclist looking for some challenges. If you want to hone your skills, sign up for a mountain biking course at Glenmore Lodge, then explore the surrounding tracks and practice what you’ve learned.

Enjoy every moment of sunshine and remember that when it rains, the countryside is just becoming greener!
