Chichen Itza Walk

Chichen Itza, Mexico

A walk through Chichen Itza, an ancient Mayan ruin in Mexico is one of the best walks in the world and a wonderful opportunity to experience history for real. The buildings and colonnaded streets offer a surprising and revealing insight into the ancient Maya life. This is the third most visited site on the Yucatan Peninsula and a walk around it is fascinating.

The centre of Chichen Itza is a mass of temples, structures and ruins but wander south of the main complex and in amongst the jungle and vines are even more ruins to explore. Walking past the Grupo de la Fecha and Grupo Principal del Suroeste there are ancient trails leading to Old Chichen. These include the Platform of the Great Turtle and the Temple of the Owls, rising out of the steamy jungle. Back in the centre of the ruins a northern track leads to two sacbeob.

Many people visit the Sacred Cenote but a walk along the Grupo del Noroeste is less visited and is a wonderful trail through overgrowth in jungle surroundings to more covered ruins. This is a humid and hot walk, but for those who like to walk among ancient ruins, one of the best.
