Crathes Castle

Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom

Crathes Castle is a 16th century harled castle located near Banchory in Aberdeenshire. It is open to the public and managed by the National Trust of Scotland.

The castle is built upon the land given to the Burnett of Leys family by the legendary King Robert the Bruce in 1323. The current castle that you visit today began construction in 1553, but was delayed several times due to the political upheaval during the time of Mary, Queen of Scots. The castle was finally completed in 1596 and today you can visit the fine interior, which features intriguing Scottish renaissance painted ceilings and Jacobean rooms. Some of the rooms you can visit include the Chamber of the Muses, Chamber of the Nine Worthies and the Green Lady’s Room, which is said to be haunted by a green lady.

The gardens are also a lovely part of any visit to Crathes Castle, with ancient yew topiary hedges and walled gardens adding to the sense of intrigue inherent in the castle. This fairytale castle is a must if you are near Aberdeen as it can easily be visited on a day trip since it is located just 14 miles from the city.
