One of the most interesting ways to see Hanoi is by taking a cyclo tour. The cyclo drivers hang out on just about every corner, especially places tourists frequent, like the Old Quarter.
Sit back in the cyclo awhile a small, very sinewy man pedals you along, deftly negotiating the narrow, congested roads around the Old Quarter. It sure beats trying to cross them yourself!
Take one at the end of the day just as the sun sets and it’s wonderful watching the light change on these ancient old buildings. It would be good to take one on arrival in the Old Quarter to get a feeling for the location of places you’d like to return to.
You need to negotiate a price before taking up the offer of a ride.
If there are two of you, ensure the ride is for you both and not per person. This is a good trip to do.
