Desert Point Surfing

Lombok, Indonesia

Desert Point is a reminder that we as surfers are entirely dependent on the forces of nature, and their collaboration, in our quest for the perfect wave. When Desert Point is on it is a stand-out, shining jewel in the very bright crown that is Indonesian surfing.

For many, catching a Desert Point tube is the pinnacle of their nomadic surfing lives. But to catch this rare gem of a wave, a solid southwest needs to travel diagonally cross the Indian Ocean from the tip of South Africa and arrive at Desert Point with no wind or a light southeast breeze blowing and a mid to low tide. When the tide is high the wave disappears and if the wind is wrong the take off becomes too bumpy.

When Mother Nature collaborates it is one of the longest makeable barrels on earth. Dessert point is a fast, hollow, non-sectioning left hand barrel over a sharp shallow coral reef. The wave increases in speed and size as it peels down the line and often ends on dry reef.

Desert Point is on the western end of Lombok Island facing back to Bali. Those seeking her treasure should try between the months of May and September and can either camp out in basic beach shacks awaiting swell or use more consistent Bali as a base and strike out by boat when the conditions appear favourable.
