Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in the Adriatic and is steeped in history. There are old narrow streets and interesting cafes in the old town and the view from the sea of this fortified city is one of the best in the world. Dubrovnik is also famous for its ramparts which surround the Old Town and which can be walked on a visit to the city.
The walls are very much a symbol of Dubrovnik and there are some spectacular views from the walkway. Dubrovnik’s walls were originally constructed in the 10th century and modified 300 years later. Over the centuries they were modified by some of the greatest architects in Europe including Michelozzo Michelozzi. They stretch 1940 metres long and in some parts are 6 metres wide. There are several towers and the Fort of St John which defended the Adriatic approach and the port.
To the east and west the fortresses of Lovrjenac and Revelin provided protection to the city. The walk not only takes in some of the most historic buildings in Dubrovnik but also passes apartments where people live and is a wonderful way to get to know this Croatian city.
