Durban Country Club

Durban, South Africa

The Country Club course is ranked in the top 100 courses in the world and considered one of the best three in the country. Built in 1922 in the heart of the city, just a kilometer away from the Golden Mile beachfront, this course has hosted the South African Open on seventeen occasions. The course wanders through undulating territory with rich tropical vegetation and very dense rough. The area was chosen for the layout due to its large dunes and massive undulations in the fairways are characteristic of the course.

The course demands care in planning your shots and precision from the tees as the rough is generally unplayable. The opening five holes are considered to be one of the best starts in golf and the par five 3rd is an internationally top rated hole. A pulpit tee offers views of the coast and the city skyline, but is exposed to the sea winds due to its height. A narrow fairway is flanked by thick bush and two well-placed fairway bunkers come into play for both long hitters and average golfers. The undulating fairway creates unusual bounces and will create an uneven stance for the approach shot to an elevated, quick green.
