Munstermaifeld, Germany
The castle, considered one of the finest in Germany, is actually made up of three residences, one which is still inhabited by the Eltz family. Touring the Castle is a delight, make sure you take the 45 minute tours that take you through two of the homes. You are in a castle proper, yet many of the rooms will feel intimate and homey. All are beautifully decorated with period pieces.
There are great canopy beds hung with rare tapestries, decorative wall paintings, little chapels with lead glass windows, the 20 or so “toilets” installed in the castle during the 19th century, and great old Gothic fireplaces (there are over 40 of them) which were used to heat the castle. You will also be able to tour the Rubenach Lower Hall with its 500 year old oak beams, beautiful paintings and tapestries. There is an impressive Knights’ Hall replete with armor and coats of arms. All of the rooms and displays provide a vivid look back into the castles history.
The Eltz Castle sits high above the Mosel River and is one of many castles you can visit along the river. If it is a nice day, bring a picnic and enjoy the castle grounds. If not, there are two self-service restaurants with local specialties within the castle grounds.
