Fez, Morocco
In North Africa Morocco has a number of interesting walks and one of the best is a walk around the old medina in Fez where visitors are bound to get lost, and that is all part of the experience. Taking a walk into the narrow winding alleys is like walking back in time and each turn leads to a part of the city’s history and culture. There are craftsmen and artisans working with wood, leather or metal in tiny hovels with limited light.
Around a corner and the bread oven heated by the communal hammam is making food for the quartier. Donkeys and mopeds rush past as the modern day catches up with the centuries old tradition of the medina. Old men can be seen sipping coffee and using nargilah. In the distance the call of the muzzein to prayer echoes across the city.
A walk around Morocco’s oldest city is one well worth taking and guaranteed to have visitors bargaining for at least one souvenir from the souk. Just be careful to use an official guide and not one of the many young men who will offer their services and then charge extortionate amounts.
