Fruita, Colorado, United States of America
As one of those venues that ends up on the covers of mountain biking magazines, the small Colorado town of Fruita has it all for the keen mountain biker. Located in the Grand Valley, an arid region bordered by the mighty Colorado River, much of the soil makes perfect hard-packed tracks. You’ll discover climbs that make you grunt and swooping descents on perfectly banked trails built by mountain bikers for mountain biking.
Check out Kessel Run or Zippity Doo Dah for moments of pure bliss. Looking for something longer than a day’s outing? The Kokopelli Trail runs 228 kilometres (142 miles) from Fruita to another prime mountain biking destination, Moab, Utah. Old jeep roads and singletrack connect to take you through spectacular desert scenery. Several companies provide supported tours with various levels of amenities.
If you’re looking for crowds of fellow enthusiasts, demos by high-end mountain bike companies and an overall good vibe, check out Fruita’s annual Fat Tire Festival, held each year at the end of April when the daytime temperatures are still pleasant. If you arrive in advance, snag a campsite at the 18 Road campground. You’ll be surrounded by other mountain bikers who all love the privilege of starting a ride practically at the doorflap of their tent.
