Giants Causeway Walk

Portstewart, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

Around 60 million years ago a series of volcanic eruptions formed basalt pillars that interlock in a path leading out to sea on the Antrim coast in Northern Ireland. Legend has it that the local giant Finn McCool formed the Causeway as he went to battle with the Scottish giant Bennandonner.

Today the Giants Causeway is a World Heritage Site and one of the most fascinating natural geological phenomena in the world. Walkers can enjoy exploring the Causeway on foot and in the vicinity the Causeway Coastal Route is an excellent way to appreciate the Antrim coastline in al its beauty.

The walk starts in Portstewart and finishes in Ballycastle which is 33 miles and can take 2-3 days to do or there are circular walks on sections of the route. Highlights of this walk include the ruins of Dunluce Castle, and Kinbane Castle as well as the Carrick-a –Reed Rope bridge which swings perilously between cliffs and is only for the adventurous to try.

There are lots of places to stay en route as well as traditional pubs and a warm Northern Irish welcome. With beautiful beaches to cool off during a walk and plenty of wildlife this is a fascinating perspective of the natural beauty of Northern Ireland.
