Glendower Golf Club

Johannesburg, South Africa

The financial capital of Africa, Johannesburg is a large modern city blessed by scores of top level golf courses. Constantly rated as one of the best in South Africa, Glendower is the foremost course in Johannesburg. Established in 1935, the club has USGA standard greens and bunkers. With a mass of indigenous trees, the layout is that of a woodlands course and is covered in lush Kikuyu lawn which allows little roll on the fairways, particularly during the wet season in summer.

The course has plenty of water in play and three of the four short holes are played over water features. Semi-rough is thick and most areas off of the fairways will have trees or overhanging branches blocking attempted rescue shots, so staying on the fairways is essential for a good score here. The feature hole is probably the par four 10th. Bunkers on either side of the fairway force a careful tee shot, long hitters will be rewarded with a short iron into the green, but for most it’s a long carry over water to a good green tight up against a small lake and protected front and right by good bunkers. Greens are fair and medium paced, making putting easier than the longer part of the game.
