Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, United States of America

User Rating     : 4 out of 5

Best visited in summer or fall, hikers will love the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can trek to waterfalls or hike the famous Appalachian Trail. If you really want to get to know the whole park quickly, book a guided hiking tour so that you also get a narrative on all the sights and the history of the park. Visit Cades Cove valley for hay rides and visit the preserved early settlers’ cabins. If you like horses, you can rent one from Smoky Mountain Riding Stables for a nice ride. And don’t forget to bring your hiking shoe! On your way there, stop by Dolly Parton’s home town! Great Smoky Mountain National Park 107 Park Headquarters Road Gatlinburg, Tennessee

I found Gatlinburg to be really touristy - you kind of get some idea how things used to be, but it's tinged with a bit of insincerity. It just feels overdone. Once you've had about all you can handle of the sideshows/museums/photo studios, put on your walking boots because you'll find some lovely trails just outside town, and some of them start right at the edge of town.

Although I'm also not a huge fan of Gatlinburg, if you are an outdoor enthusiast and are in the central/east US, the Smoky Mountains offers some beautiful views and great hiking & backpacking terrain. There are trails for all levels of experience and desired distance, and there's simply nothing like being in the mountains---not many better ways to experience nature in my view.
