Hanningfield Reservoir Visitor Centre

Downham, Essex, United Kingdom

Hanningfield Reservoir Visitor Centre, Hawkswood Road, Downham, Billericay, Essex CM11 1WT Several miles from the asphalt of Basildon, is Hanningfield Reservoir – 870 acres of fresh water that supplies around 540,000 homes in Essex and parts of Greater London. The reservoir was constructed in the early 1950s by flooding an ancient hamlet called Peasdown. It is now fed by nearby rivers, Blackwater and Chelmer. The reservoir boasts a number of leisure activities including trout fishing and bird-watching. On its shores, visitors can also enjoy an orienteering course or the chance to amble through the nature trails that criss-cross its 30 acres of beautiful, ancient woodland.
