Hawaii Mountain Biking

Hawaii, United States of America

The Hawaiian holiday of a lifetime would not be complete without mountain biking. Due to the abundant opportunities for varied, exotic activities such as sailing, snorkelling or scuba diving, many people prefer to add one-day or half-day mountain bike rides to their itinerary. Whether you will be spending time on just one of the Hawaiian islands or exploring several, you’ll find numerous shops with bikes for hire and guided rides.

If your vacation takes you to the ‘Big Island’, as the island of Hawaii itself is fondly known, how about a ride across lava fields? A one-day trip can take you through several microclimates, including tropical forest, native rain forest and the exotic moonscape of Kilauea Volcano. Depending on the flow of the molten rock during your visit, you might see steam escaping from vents or the flow of the lava itself.

Spending your time on Maui? Keen on downhilling? Try out one of the organised trips that transports you by mini-van to the summit of Mt Haleakala, at 3,055 metres (10,023 feet) above sea level, to watch the sun come up. Then you’ll be driven partway back down the mountain to a more reasonable 1,981 metres (6,500 feet) and be turned lose to descend an additional 914 metres (3,000 feet) in 16 kilometres (10 miles) of riding on spectacular trail overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
