Himeji Castle

Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan

Himeji Castle is considered by the Japanese to be one of the three best feudal Japanese castles in the country and it is certainly one of the most impressive and best preserved. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Himeji Castle is easy to get to from Osaka or Kobe – you can access it through JR Rail and the Himeji train station is only a 10 minute walk away from the castle. The castle was built in 1333 and today has 83 different buildings in the complex making it the largest surviving castle in the country. You can either discover the castle by yourself or take a guided tour, with an English speaking guide. The tiling of the castle is exquisite and features fascinating family crests.
