Jomolhari, Bhutan
The Jomolhari Trek in the northern part of Bhutan is considered the best walk in the country. This takes the form of an eight day horseshoe walk which follows some ancient tracks between the mountain ranges of Tibet and Bhutan.
The trek then turns towards the east above the country’s capital Thimpu where the valley is descended. The Jomolhari Trek passes traditional Bhutanese villages which are very Tibetan Buddhist in culture and then through forest to the foot of the sacred Jomolhari itself. The walk then crosses two high passes, passes some isolated forts or dzongs and then heads back down to the valley.
The walk is particularly demanding as four nights are spent at an altitude above 4000 metres and the highest point at 4870 metres, and in very cold conditions. There are camping areas and lodges along the way and the scenery and people are perhaps one of the best reasons for coming to Bhutan. This classic trek takes around a week to complete and is an excellent if challenging way to experience Bhutan and the unique culture of this Himalayan nation.
