Jotunheimen, Norway
The Jotunheimen Mountains are located in Central Norway and are one of the oldest and most traditional walking areas in the country. With 24 peaks to choose from there are a number of routes to bear in mind when planning a walk. Besseggen is the most famous hike in Scandinavia. Most people take the bus or car to Gjendesheim and from there a boat to Memarubu. From here the Besseggen can be walked back to Gjendesheim.
En route walkers can expect to see the green glacial water of Lake Gjendevannet and the deeper blue Lake Bessvannet set against stunning views of the Jontunheimen Mountains. The walk usually takes around 6-7 hours to complete and walkers should wear clothing suited to sudden changes in the weather.
A good alternative to the Besseggen hike is the Knutsho which begins in the resort of Valdresflya. This is a very steep climb with spectacular views and walkers usually complete the route over the mountain with a walk along the shores of Lake Leirungen and the river Leirungsaai. Knutsho takes around 5-6 hours to complete and should be avoided by those who do not like steep climbs.
