Kawana, Japan
Japan has around 2,500 golf courses, more than the rest of Asia put together, and as serious golf lovers have constructed some of the finest courses in the world. Kawana Resort has two courses, built along the Izu Peninsula of Honshu and the Fuji course is recognized as the better of the two. Rated as one of the top courses in Japan, Fuji opened for play in 1936 and at $300 per round is the most expensive course in the country. Laid out along an elevated headland, the course offers stunning views of the Pacific below and with the manicured fairways framed by lush forest with Mount Fuji as the backdrop, it’s easy to see why it is a favourite amongst local golfers.
The short 16th is tone of the most difficult on the course; although it measures only 157m, the green is atop a small hill. Bunkers and bad rough are the reward for any misdirected tee shots. The 11th is a well known sight and the signature hole of the course . At 520m it is the longest par five on the course; Mount Fuji lies to the left and the green is at the foot of a lighthouse built in the shape of a tee peg, presenting a unique and memorable scene. Imagine that picture hanging in your bar with you and your putter in the foreground.
