Kiawah Island, South Carolina, United States of America
The Kiawah Resort is a golfer’s ideal vacation. Sporting five championship courses, the Pete Dye designed Ocean Course is the most renowned and has hosted the Ryder Cup amongst others. A prevailing wind from the ocean, numerous dunes, bunkers and marshes spread throughout its design contribute to making it a challenging course which has consistently been rated amongst the world’s best since it opened. Water comes into play on almost all of the holes – which is fitting as the scenic course provides a view of the ocean on every hole. Ten holes are built on four kilometers of the Atlantic; the other eight wind through the surrounding marshes and dunes in a natural links-style environment reminiscent of the great courses of Scotland.
The par four 18th is a favourite closing hole for many golfers. Teeing off from a natural dune, a drive carries a large waste bunker to a large landing area which overlooks the green below and sweeping views of the ocean. As it generally plays into the wind, most would expect to take a club or two more than normal.
For the non-golfers, there’s a good selection of other activities including bike trails and canoeing, plus excellent dining throughout the resort.
