Kinkakuji Temple

Kinkakuji Temple

Kyoto, Japan

Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is a zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the best known sites in a city, that is not short of stunning cultural and religious sites. When you visit, you will not be left wondering why it was named the Golden Pavilion – it is completely covered in gold leaf!

It was originally built as a villa for the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397, but was bequeathed to the Renzai Buddhist Sect upon his death. The temple and its gardens are simply beautiful and so peaceful that you are sure to leave feeling a little “zen” yourself. The temple also has a charming little tea garden, where you can try traditional matcha green tea.
