Kronborg Castle

Kronborg Castle

Helsingor, Denmark

A castle experience that will keep the whole family enthralled, Kronborg Castle is well worth a visit. It is a listed World Heritage site and is where Shakespeare based Hamlet, earning it the nickname “Hamlet’s Castle”.

Children will especially enjoy the playground or the special exhibition called “The Castle of the Sound Dues”, an interactive experience about the lives of Kings, their wars, their gold and their properties. There are also sound effects evident throughout the castle echoing the sound of soldiers marching by, cannons being fired, and prisoners in the dungeons calling out.

Adults will find the main courtyard of the Renaissance castle and fortress quite impressive as it leads into a well-preserved interior for a visit to the Ballroom, Chapel, Apartments and the eerie dark dungeons. A free guided Casements Tour, where you discover the Secret Stairway of the King, is provided.

Outside, climb 199 steps to the top of the tower to the roof for fantastic views of the coastline across to Sweden and leave time to tour the exceptional grounds outside of the castle wall. During the summer, visitors can also attend performances of Hamlet on the grounds.
