La Graviere Surfing

Soorts-Hossegor, Landes, France

La Graviere is the centrepiece of the famous Hossegor region, home to the best beach breaks in Europe. It breaks fast and furiously with a thick lip and rather close to shore. La Graviere is famous for delivering huge beach break barrels, breaking boards and cramming sand were it doesn’t belong.

Heavy beach breaks mean strong rips and La Graviere has a current like a river mouth. Paddle fitness is the key to survival, as well as a tide chart. The tides are up to 7m and what starts as a perfect sandbar can be a gnarly close-out as the tide changes. La Graviere is best in a northwest swell and a breeze from the East.

Hossegor is a long stretch of golden sand beaches with numerous world class beach breaks. La Lord is another spot that handles 3m swells and delivers a very meaty ride. Alternatively, La Sud, is a mellower beachie that gives intermediates a chance to get a wave.

The beachside town of Hossegor is a summer tourist destination. There is plenty of nightlife and party people for out of the water diversions, which can be a blessing in the middle of an Atlantic flat spell.
