Macaronis Surfing

Pagai, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

Macaronis could well be the best wave in the world. Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands are often cited as the best surfing region on earth and Maca’s is regarded as the best wave discovered in the Mentawais.

Maca’s has it all. A long peeling lefthander (it goes without saying it is perfect), initially a fast moving barrel and further down the line a skaters half-pipe shaped wave that is absolutely ripable and allows as many trick as can be imagined.

Macaronis is fun and friendly at 3ft and builds up to 8ft, by then it is a solid top to bottom barrel. With swells bigger than 8ft, the size stays the same but the barrel grows in width and lip gets thicker (i.e. it is no longer friendly).

This wave’s list of credentials does not stop there. Macaronis is very consistent. It can be surfed on all tides and in all winds. It is even considered more fun in an onshore by some surfers, though a 6ft southwest swell, with an easterly blowing and mid tide is ideal.

To surf Macaronis there are two options. One, book a charter boat through the Mentawai Islands or two, stay at the land based surf camp in front of the wave, which gives the best chance of scoring a session between crowds.
