Malibu, California, United States of America
Malibu may not be the biggest or heaviest wave in the world, but for the amount of surf history, and longboarding, Malibu is one of the best.
Malibu became the focal point of SoCal surfing way back in the 40s. That was when the boards were all long and hot-dog surfing was the order of the day, which is exactly what First Point Malibu is suited to.
First Point at Malibu is still up there with the best small right hand point breaks in the world. It offers perfect walling rides that seem to peel at the exact speed of a nose-ride. It is the most consistent of Malibu’s three points and the most crowded.
Second and Third Point are faster and more high performance waves. On the right swell angle it is possible to connect the sections for one long ride that will leave no doubt as to why the crowd is there. Malibu picks up south to southwest swells, works on all tides and is offshore in a northerly.
Malibu is in LA, and the best way to really enjoy Malibu, and for that matter LA, is to embrace the crowd. Observe the antics and people watch, expect to see model like bodies, next to twinkle toed fat guys and beginners jostling with longboarding pro’s.
If you happen to find Malibu with no one out, do not be tempted, the Malibu creek can get heavily poo-luted and the E.coli count is dangerously high when the lagoon empties into the sea.
