Shenzhen, China
Just an hour’s drive from Hong Kong lies the world’s largest golf club. 216 holes on twelve courses designed by such luminaries as Jack Nicklaus, Ernie Els, Greg Norman, Pete Dye, José María Olazábal, Nick Faldo and more presents as much choice in style as anyone could want. The Els Course is styled in a garden course similar to Ernie Els’s South African home course, Norman’s course has a distinct Australian feel to it, Vijay’s Course has a 150 m long beach bunker on one of the holes. It is the Norman Course which is considered to be the best of them all. The course is long, has a slope rating of 150 and is reckoned to be the most difficult in Asia. Narrow fairways are flanked by long grass and dense forest and the fescue rough waits to gobble up any misdirected shots. Many of the carries are challenging at the least, one measuring in excess of 240 m. Two par fours exceed 440 m and the par five 14th measures a full 589 m, so be sure to take your long game with you on this one. Bunkering is also distinctive on the course with many of them being particularly large and steep, dropping down to crater-like centers with buttressed lips. Whatever your preference is in terms of style, you are sure to find it amongst the twelve courses here.
