Mongolia Mountain Biking

For memories to last a lifetime, try mountain biking the Mongolian countryside, the land of Silk Road history and one of the most pristine regions of the modern world.

The majority of the Mongolian population of today still lives the same nomadic existence as generations of their forefathers, carrying their yurt homes with them as they follow their flocks of sheep, goats and yaks. Despite 70 years under communist domination, the infrastructure we’ve come to expect, even in the poorest nations, has not spoiled the loveliness of this land. In vast parts of the country, nothing man-made mars the beauty of fertile plains and magnificent mountains.

Imagine riding through rolling grasslands on tracks used only by horses or rough dirt roads travelled by the occasional old Russian jeep. Apart from scattered groupings of yurts, you might not see any other people for hours at a time.

For the fit, experienced rider, hire a guide or join a tour hosted by professional, local cyclists and spend your time riding completely off-road, crossing high mountain passes or the Gobi Desert. The most daring of riders can follow the route of the Mongolia Bike Challenge, a newly created race of 1,200 kilometres in nine stages, with all GPS waypoints available online.
