Mount Etna

Mount Etna, Sicily, Italy

User Rating     : 4 out of 5

As the 2nd most active volcano in the world, Mt. Etna is a very popular attraction for travelers visiting Sicily. The guided tours are an extremely unique experience, but plan on making this an all day trip. Once you make your way to the cable car station, it is about a 25 minute ride in the cable car before a half hour shuttle. While this is an active volcano that has erupted recently, it is not a threat for visitors who stay within the marked areas as the flow of lava from eruptions here is quite slow. The Volcano is quite impressive and the landscape looks like what you would expect if you had just landed on the moon. While you won’t see any massive eruptions or what you might commonly think of when hearing of a volcano, the trip is a very fun experience and is just about as close as anyone will ever get to an active volcano while living to tell about it.

The largest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna still regularly bursts out lava and ash. You visit some of the mountain villages and see the old lava flows, walk the trails, or if you’re not into hiking, just admire her from a distance with a glass of wine.

Mount Etna is beautiful, and you can see it from many of the surrounding towns in Sicily. Our favorite town is Taormina, Sicily, which offers a great view of both Mount Etna and the Mediterranean, as well as the countryside once you get to the center of town. We've explored the whole island of Sicily and were amazed by all there is to see and do, no matter what part of the island you're on.
