Mount Olympus Trek

Mount Olympus, Greece

Mount Olympus is the highest peak in Greece and is the home of the ancient Greek gods. The heart of the summit looks like a huge cauldron with jagged peaks. It is usually climbed in two days and can also be part walked to the mountain hut and back again in a day. The area is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve with four distinct zones.

The trek up Mount Olympus begins through pine forest climbing through shrubs and wild flowers. There are over 1700 recorded floral species in these mountains. The route climbs to the mountain refuge at Zolotas where those attempting the hike to the summit spend the night. The following morning walkers climb to the high ridge and on to the summit itself.

At Mitikas walkers can see spectacular views across the mountains in what was the meeting place of Zeus and the ancient Greek gods. Just down from Mitikas is the grassy Plateau of the Muses and at Stefani with its extraordinary rock formations is the throne of Zeus. Many people finish the Olympus walk with a trail through the magnificent Epineas Gorge which drains out to the sea.
