Muirfield Village Golf Club

Dublin, Ohio, United States of America

One of the first courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Muirfield is constantly ranked in the top 50 courses of the world. As is the case with most layouts, this course reflects the style and strengths of its designer – it plays long and a golfer who is able to shape his shots will be rewarded with a good scorecard.  The terrain is hilly, magnificently manicured and has water in play on nine of the holes. Nicklaus has often said that golf is a much better game play downhill than uphill and his philosophy is represented in many of the holes on this course; most tee boxes are elevated or play into the valley below. The main feature of this course is its par fives, probably the best collection of long holes you can find anywhere. The 5th, 11th and 15th holes are all world class par fives which play to long manicured fairways below. All of them make use of Deer Creek which snakes through the course, and most play to the fairways below which slope towards the water. Low handicap golfers who struck the ball long distances may be able to reach the greens in two but these shots represent classic risk and reward golf. A short or poorly aimed stroke is likely to end up in the creek; long shots will probably run through the bunker and end up in difficult bunkers beyond the flag. Either way, this is an exceptionally well manicured course, which is very pleasing to the eye.
