Fussen, Bavaria, Germany
One of the top castles to visit in Europe, Neuschwanstein Castle fulfills all our dreams of what we imagine a castle to be like. Even driving up to it feels as if you are in Cinderella’s chariot going to the ball. It has fanciful turrets and over-the-top decorative elements that make sense when you learn that the designer of the castle worked as a theatrical stage designer!
The theatrical thread extends further, as King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the castle to be built as an homage to his favorite composer, Richard Wagner, with a Hall of Singers, a ballroom painted with themes from Wagnerian operas, and many rooms specifically designed to act as a “stage” for a Wagnerian opera.
This whimsical castle will thrill children, as it so perfectly personifies the Disney “look”. That theme park feel will also be found on a visit to the Grotto, a room built as an artificial cave. Adults will want to visit the ornate formal state rooms of the King, filled with period antiques and exquisite hand painted murals.
