New Zealand Biking

New Zealand Mountain Biking

South Island, New Zealand

For the keen, serious mountain biker, a holiday in New Zealand is just the ticket. You’ll revel in world-class riding and enjoy the best accommodation and food to keep you fit for each new day’s singletrack extravaganza.

Whilst you’re exploring the South Island, don’t miss a three-year window (present until 2013) to ride the famous Heaphy Trail! After a ban on mountain biking, which extended for more than a decade, this 80 kilometre, backcountry track, starting at Golden Bay, is once again open to cyclists. Intermediate and advanced riders can complete the journey in three days and can take advantage of several tour operators’ services to arrange logistics.

Going to be in the neighbourhood of Wellington on the North Island? Then don’t miss a visit to the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park. Volunteers organised by professional mountain bikers have been building track since the late 1990s, all of it designed to give you, the lucky rider, a trail to write home about.

Are you seriously hardcore, looking for rides to remember for a lifetime? A company on the South Island, in Queenstown, offers guided heli-biking trips above the tree line and through high country farms on private lands. What a way to go!
