Jeju Island, South Korea
Built on the volcanic island of Jeju, an hour’s flight south of Seoul, at a cost of $100 million, the course has two distinctly themed nine hole loops. The front nine Creek Course features creeks, stone walls and treed fairways; the back nine resembles a Scottish Highlands layout with a lake, meadows and deep bunkers. More than a hundred bunkers are scattered strategically throughout the course. The entire course has a manicured finish to it, reminiscent of the top American courses. The routing wanders through the pine forested slopes of Mount Halla, Korea’s highest mountain and down to the flatter areas below it. The course is named for the eight bridges built on it; the ninth being the imaginary bridge between the mainland and the golf course. Those eight bridges are more than just adornment, as water is in play on many of the holes. The club has an architectural wonder in its clubhouse too, spacious with clean lines, the locker room has three traditional stone baths, each at a different temperature. Its restaurant is well worth the visit on its own. Top chefs received international training to present culinary expertise in both Asian and Western cuisine.
