Detroit, Michigan, United States of America
The club has two courses; the South side being the championship course in a parkland setting. It is spacious and long, the greens are often two-tiered and fast and the bunkers are quite spectacular. Lush, perfectly manicured fairways lead almost seamlessly to the sand – even laying up for a short iron on the longer holes will often mean you still have a bunker to deal with. Along with these features, the course is long, making it a favoured challenge for many of the professionals on circuit.
The 10th and 11th present a medley of world class holes. Hole number 10 is an average length par 4 with a prominent tree on the left and a wide fairway will you into aiming at a center line, which will gently feed the ball down its right side to an intricate system of white bunkers. If you miss the bunkers you are likely to be left with a blind approach into the elevated green. The 11th plays parallel to the 10th in the opposite direction. The trick is again to favour the left side off the tee. This fairway also slopes severely left to right off the tee, where a bad shot will leave you a blind shot to a difficult green. Hit it to the correct spot and the slope changes right to left. It’s an unusual hole; a sharp hill creates two distinct landing areas that slope off in opposite directions for two different results.
