Oitavos Dunes

Cascais, Portugal

West of Lisbon, outside of the quant seaside village of Cascais is the Quinta da Mirinha resort, home of the Oitavos Dunes course. The course is built on the most westerly part of Europe and mixes wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean with the backdrop of the Sintra Mountains. The land on which it is built has dense umbrella pines, massive grassy dunes and open links lands leading to the coast. The layout is a clever mix of links-like and woodlands holes, cleverly laid out to make maximum use of the changing character of the holes.

The opening four holes are tree-lined, testing start to the course, but the next twelve holes are played in a more open links environment and are exposed to the coastal winds. The greens are fast and hard with difficult contours to test even the best of putters. The back nine has three par threes in four holes, but amongst them is the signature 14th hole – a truly world-class par three. High sand dunes line either side of the green on the other side of a ravine, with the Atlantic as its scenic backdrop. If the shot is into the wind a low three iron, drawing into the kidney-shaped green may be your best option.
