Bandon, Oregon, United States of America
In relation to the numerous 100-year-old courses Pacific Dunes is a baby, opening as recently as 2001 and it’s the baby of the three courses at the Bandon Dunes resort. It is considered one of the best public courses in the world, drawing favorable comparison with Pebble Beach. Built along the Pacific coast in Oregon, the course provides a links layout that will satisfy any purist. The ocean comes into play as early as the 4th green; it’s after hitting your drive that you will begin to hear the sea. Suddenly the hole doglegs to the right offering you a view of a green flanked by two bunkers with the ocean at its back – now you have the distraction of the magnificent view to contend with too. The fifth hole is equally entertaining and visually spectacular with a fairway cut along the cliff edge and the biggest water hazard in the world below it. As is the case with most links courses, coastal winds and undulating fairways are all part of the package, but despite the degree of difficulty this is still an enjoyable course. Be prepared to shoot one of the highest scores of your life and still walk off the course smiling. The other two courses will be waiting tomorrow.
