Palikir Pass Surfing

Pohnpei, Micronesia

In a remote oft forgotten corner of the pacific islands lies a rare gem of the surfing world. A world class wave with friendly locals!

P Pass short for Palikir Pass has been labelled one of the best right hand barrels in the world. It has made cover shots and professional surfers make wild claims like “best wave of my life”. Those epic days do not happen very often and locals claim most of the time it is a fun, to serious with size, wave and a flawless tube that the average surfer can paddle into without the pro’s, aggro’s or swarming pack of hungry surfers.

P Pass breaks along a passage through a fringing coral reef, so boat access is required. The story goes like this; P Pass is fun on a small day (2ft-4ft), at 4ft-5ft it gets more serious but still has a predictable take-off, perfect wall and 2 barrel sections, beyond 5ft (it holds 2 ½ times overhead), it’s the perfect gapping barrel seen in magazines and no longer a casual surfers wave. It has been surfed bigger, but it doubles up and looks not unlike Shipsturns Bluff.

The season for P Pass is from October to April with the height of the swells rolling through January and February. It breaks in all north swells and the predominant southeast trade winds are offshore to sideshore at different sections along the wave.

P Pass is close to the Island of Pohnpie, and part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Pohnpie is also home to a range of other quality reef breaks and friendly locals.
