Patuxai

Vientiane, Laos

Patuxai is a standout feature on the landscape of Vientiane. It’s portrayed as an Arc de Triomphe replica and it commemorates those Lao people who died in pre-revolution wars. It’s worth the climb to the top for grand views over the very flat city of Vientiane. The views of the gardens below and the grand streets leading up to the monument are impressive. I recommend spending some time afterwards in the landscaped area around Patuxai. Don’t miss the fountain. Sit awhile and, if you’re lucky, you might see the fountain playing. As I sat there the music blared out in concert with the ebb and flow of the fountain. It was a lovely sight and quite unexpected. I just love the story about how it was built. Laos is a very poor country and the USA donated some cement for a new airport. The locals decided instead to use the cement to build this monument!
