Pebble Beach, California, United States of America
Universally known due to its regular and detailed international television coverage, a first-time visitor may be surprised to find the opening holes less familiar or intimidating off the tees but the best is yet to come. Holes 5 to 8 are some of the most spectacularly scenic you are likely to find any where with breathtaking views over Stillwater Cove and the Pacific Ocean. They prove that the magic of the course is found on the front nine, but the famous back nine still provide entertainment and legendary challenges.
The signature hole of the course is probably the 8th, with the coastline running along the length of the right side of this dogleg right. The landing zone is elevated above the tee, leaving you with a view of the green well below the cliff for your longish approach shot. Once you get there, you have the super quick and unforgiving green surface to contend with, keeping this course a challenge at any level of golf. At around $500 for a round you are certain to remember this course, if only for the price. Tom Watson agrees, in part. “Ask any golfer around the world to name a golf course in the United States, and Pebble Beach will be the first thing they say.”
